Root Canals Leawood

Our core philosophy at  Dental 133 is to help you keep your natural teeth as long as possible.

While root canal therapy has gained a bad reputation in the past, itís mostly because itís widely misunderstood. We want to assure you that itís not the process that is painful; itís actually your infection or decay that is the cause of your discomfort.

Root canal therapy not only alleviates your pain, it also preserves your tooth. Dr. Engelmann takes every measure to ensure that this procedure is as comfortable as possible for you, and many patients are pleasantly surprised at how smoothly their treatment goes.

When Do I Need a Root Canal?

When your tooth sustains an injury, decay, or fracture, sometimes an infection can develop. Dental infections can be very painful, and you may experience a constant toothache or pain.

Itís important to understand that dental infections wonít go away without treatment, and you need to be proactive about getting treatment to avoid further damage, more infection, or tooth loss.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

We will carefully remove the infected tissue from the root canals in your tooth. Once the infection is cleaned out, your tooth is sealed with a temporary filling and allowed time to heal. After healing, Dr. Engelmann will restore your tooth with either a permanent filling or dental crown to ensure strength and longevity.

Dr. Engelmann uses rotary endodontics to make your root canal procedure more comfortable and efficient. Rotary endodontics utilizes electric instead of manual hand instruments that allow the process to be completed in a timelier manner. Because theyíre made of nickel-titanium rather than stainless steel, rotary tools are more flexible and can enter the canal more easily than manual tools.

Will a Root Canal Hurt?

At Dental 133, our goal is to make every procedure and experience you have with us as pleasant and comfortable as possible, and root canal therapy is no exception.

Great care is taken to ensure your tooth is gently put to sleep prior to treatment and remains asleep for the duration of the procedure so you wonít feel a thing. This also immediately alleviates your pain and discomfort.

You can also enjoy music or watch your favorite television program during your procedure to help you feel at ease.

How do I know I need a root canal?

It starts off as a slight twinge in your tooth when you're eating or drinking a cold beverage. You don't think too much about it because it goes away quickly. Then next you know, your tooth is starting to hurt, but Ibuprofen seems to do the trick, so you don't worry. Before you know it, your tooth is waking you up at night, and now you've got a full blown toothache. You visit your dentist to find that you need a root canal in Leawood. How did this happen?

Decay in your tooth often starts off as sensitivity to hot or cold. If you are proactive and have your tooth checked out with your dentist, a dental filling can often eliminate the decay and strengthen your tooth. If decay is left untreated, it will progress to the nerve, or pulp of your tooth and cause an infection and this is when a root canal becomes necessary to eliminate the decay and preserve your tooth.

Trauma or an injury to your tooth may also require root canal therapy. If you are experiencing sensitivity or pain contact Dental 133 right away to be seen for treatment.

What happens if I put off a root canal?

At Dental 133, we understand that the idea of root canal treatment can be a little worrisome. After all, root canals are painful, right?

Not so! We perform comfortable root canals in our Leawood dental office that actually relieve rather than cause pain, leaving no reason to postpone your root canal treatment. In fact, doing so can have disastrous results.

Putting Off Root Canal Treatment

If you have an infection in your tooth, putting it off may result in the need for an extraction. Leaving your tooth infected also becomes quite painful, causing inflammation, as well as jaw and facial pain.
